Third time is always a charm, and Oh, Sleeper (and their fans) are just that, with the band's third, release, "Children of Fire," on Solid State Records. Since their debut, "When I am God," in 2007, OS has matured as a band-and musicians- while getting heavier in the process. The album cover looks like the poster to a horror film, but that seems to be the ongoing theme with this band, anyway.
Out of all Oh, Sleeper's releases, this one is their strongest and has a cohesive flow of songs, where in the past their track list seemed to ebb and flow a little. While the guitar work is still heavy and thick, it continues to be adventurous as they began exploring new techniques with their last album, "Son of The Morning." The finger tapping techniques are a little trickier and the verse riffs have gotten creepier. The opening track, "Endseekers," contains a heavy set of chorus gang vocals that give dramatic emphasis and will serve them well when they play this start playing this song live. Sometimes a band has to write in preparation for a good show, and this one hits the spot.
Other than the opening track mentioned above, a few songs to check out are, "Hush Yael," "Means To Believe," and "Claws Of A God." While it is a strong album, there are one or two filler tracks that cause it to leak, but over all Oh, Sleeper has hit the jackpot and their songwriting abilities shine.
